I read the other day that Radiohead had been nominated 14 times without winning, whilst Robbie Williams has won 11 awards after 20 (i think) nominations. I think that tells you everything you need to know about the gravitas such an awards ceremony has.
I'm not suggesting everyone should detest pop music, but the fact the charts are a boring procession of X Factor winners or rejects goes a long way to explaining why the awards have no life left in them.

As a long-time journalist who's fairly recently completed the CAM Diploma in Marketing Communications, I agree with you - PR and journalism require some of the same skills but in many crucial ways are very different. I can sympathise with editors of local or niche publications who have to work so closely with advertisers that they feel they are offering PR services for nothing. But setting up in business as a PR agency? That's another kettle of fish. Just as one example: so often these days PR is part of an integrated, multi-disciplinary campaign requiring teamwork, compromise and diplomacy - skills that not all journalists feel they need! And as you say, professional PR requires a sophisticated knowledge of brand-building and reputation management - in bad times as well as good. These are skills journalists can learn, of course, but not something that anyone can turn their hand to just like that.
I enjoy copywriting for commercial clients and working with PR firms. But run an account? No thank you! I'll leave that to the professionals.
